The fate of other theorems and problems is peculiar... How can one explain, for example, such exceptional attention on the part of mathematicians and mathematicians to the Pythagorean theorem? Why were many of them not satisfied with the already known proofs, but found their own, bringing the number of proofs to several hundred in twenty-five comparatively observable centuries?
When it comes to the Pythagorean theorem, the unusual begins with its name. It is believed that it was by no means Pythagoras who formulated it for the first time. It is also doubtful that he gave her proof. If Pythagoras is a real person (some even doubt this!), then he most likely lived in the 6th-5th centuries. BC e. He himself did not write anything, he called himself a philosopher, which meant, in his understanding, “aspiring to wisdom”, founded the Pythagorean Union, whose members were engaged in music, gymnastics, mathematics, physics and astronomy. Apparently, he was also a great orator, as evidenced by the following legend relating to his stay in the city of Croton: outlined the duties of the young men, that the elders in the city asked not to leave them without teaching. In this second speech, he pointed to legality and purity of morals, as the foundations of the family; in the next two he addressed children and women. The consequence of the last speech, in which he especially condemned luxury, was that thousands of precious dresses were delivered to the temple of Hera, for not a single woman dared to show herself in them on the street anymore ... ”Nevertheless, back in the second century of our era, that is, after 700 years, quite real people lived and worked, outstanding scientists who were clearly under the influence of the Pythagorean union and treated with great respect for what, according to legend, Pythagoras created.
It is also undoubted that the interest in the theorem is caused both by the fact that it occupies one of the central places in mathematics, and by the satisfaction of the authors of the proofs who overcame the difficulties, about which the Roman poet Quintus Horace Flaccus, who lived before our era, well said: “It is difficult to express well-known facts” .
Initially, the theorem established the relationship between the areas of squares built on the hypotenuse and the legs of a right triangle:

In a right triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs.

For example, one of the first Egyptian pyramids, the Pyramid of Khafre, whose construction dates back to the 26th century BC (2000 years before the life of Pythagoras), was built based on the knowledge of the aspect ratio in a 3x4x5 right triangle.

Why, then, does the theorem now bear the name of a Greek? The answer is simple: Pythagoras is the first to mathematically prove this theorem. The surviving Babylonian and Egyptian written sources speak only of its use, but do not provide any mathematical proof.

It is believed that Pythagoras proved the theorem under consideration by using the properties of similar triangles, which he obtained by drawing a height in a right triangle from an angle of 90 o to the hypotenuse.

An example of using the Pythagorean theorem

Consider a simple problem: it is necessary to determine the length of an inclined staircase L, if it is known that it has a height H = 3 meters, and the distance from the wall against which the staircase rests to its foot is P = 2.5 meters.

In this case, H and P are the legs, and L is the hypotenuse. Since the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs, we get: L 2 \u003d H 2 + P 2, whence L \u003d √ (H 2 + P 2) \u003d √ (3 2 + 2.5 2) \u003d 3.905 meters or 3 m and 90, 5 cm

Proof of the Pythagorean Theorem

Let triangle $A B C$ be a right triangle with right angle $C$ (Fig. 2).

Let's draw a height from the vertex $C$ to the hypotenuse $A B$, denote the base of the height as $H$ .

Right triangle $A C H$ is similar to triangle $A B C$ in two angles ($\angle A C B=\angle C H A=90^(\circ)$, $\angle A$ is common). Similarly, triangle $C B H$ is similar to $A B C$ .

Introducing the notation

$$B C=a, A C=b, A B=c$$

from the similarity of triangles we get that

$$\frac(a)(c)=\frac(H B)(a), \frac(b)(c)=\frac(A H)(b)$$

$c^(2)=a^(2)+b^(2)=6^(2)+8^(2)=36+64=100$

Exercise. Find the area of ​​a right triangle if it is known that one of its legs is 5 cm longer than the other, and the hypotenuse is 25 cm.

Solution. Let $x$ cm be the length of the smaller leg, then $(x+5)$ cm is the length of the larger one. Then, according to the Pythagorean theorem, we have:

$$x^(2)+(x+5)^(2)=25^(2)$$

We open the brackets, reduce similar ones and solve the resulting quadratic equation:

$x^(2)+5 x-300=0$

According to Vieta's theorem, we get that

$x_(1)=15$ (cm) , $x_(2)=-20$ (cm)

The value of $x_(2)$ does not satisfy the condition of the problem, which means that the smaller leg is 15 cm, and the larger one is 20 cm.

The area of ​​a right triangle is half the product of the lengths of its legs, that is

$$S=\frac(15 \cdot 20)(2)=15 \cdot 10=150\left(\mathrm(cm)^(2)\right)$$

Pythagorean theorem- one of the fundamental theorems of Euclidean geometry, establishing the relationship between the sides of a right triangle.

The ancient Chinese book "Zhou bi suan jing" speaks of a Pythagorean triangle with sides 3, 4 and 5. The largest German historian of mathematics Moritz Kantor (1829 - 1920) believes that the equality $3^(2)+4^(2)=5^ (2) $ was already known to the Egyptians around 2300 BC. According to the scientist, the builders then built right angles using right-angled triangles with sides 3, 4 and 5. Somewhat more is known about the Pythagorean theorem among the Babylonians. One text gives an approximate calculation of the hypotenuse of an isosceles right triangle.

At the moment, 367 proofs of this theorem have been recorded in the scientific literature. Probably, the Pythagorean theorem is the only theorem with such an impressive number of proofs. Such a variety can only be explained by the fundamental significance of the theorem for geometry.
