I don’t know about you personally, but for all my students, one of the most favorite topics is the topic with “tail” questions. Not difficult to understand and quick to learn, it instantly won the hearts of all English language learners. Therefore, today the topic of our conversation is Question Tags: grammar.
A few rules, a little more examples and a lot of exercises await you!

What are tail questions for?

If you translate “tail” questions into Russian, they will all mean “Isn’t it so?” or “Isn’t that right?”
In most schools this topic is taught in 7th grade. But even a student who has entered the 5th grade can master this topic, because by this time he should have already explain basic sentence structure and at least present time Simple.

The rules and reasons for using these questions in English are very simple:

When in a conversation we need to clarify information or confirm our thoughts.
If we want the interlocutor to comment on our words.
Sometimes we just need to get the other person to agree with our thoughts.

How are tail questions formed?

Finding the auxiliary verb (is, are, am, ) in a declarative sentence.
She is a doctor.
If it is positive (is, are, am, was, were, have, has, had, do, does, did, will) - make it negative.
He is a good student, isn’t he?
If it's negative (isn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't, haven't, hasn't, hadn't, don't, doesn't, didn't, won't) - make it positive .
He is not a good student, is he?
If the auxiliary verb “escaped” from our sentence (as happens in the present and past tense), then we put in the tail the auxiliary verb of the tense in which the sentence is written.
She speaks English very well, doesn’t she? He worked last week, didn't he?
If we have in our offer modal verbs (can, must, etc.) - We use them in a ponytail.
He can drive a car, can’t he?

So that you don't think that everything is so simple - here you go some specific cases where mistakes are most often made:

I am tall, aren't I?- We can’t write amn’t!
She had to leave the house, didn’t she? — Here "had" is not an auxiliary verb!

A few pitfalls

To answer a tail question, you need to address the question itself, not the tail. If the sentence is affirmative, then when agreeing say yes, and when disagreeing - no. If a sentence denies something, then agreement is expressed by the word no, and disagreement by the word yes.
In tail questions, a lot depends on intonation. If you lower your voice, then the other person will think that you don’t need an answer. But if you raise your intonation on the tail, expect a detailed answer to the question.
Sometimes Americans - lazy creatures in terms of language - simply use the word instead of a tail right.
Sometimes tails are used in command sentences or request sentences. So, in such cases they usually use verbs can\will or won't. The former is usually used for orders, while the latter is used for requests.
It's stuffy. Open the window, won’t you? It's stuffy, can you open the window?
