It's no secret that women love to read for the soul. Most representatives of the beautiful half of humanity love to read about love. Love novels are also designed for a certain circle of readers, but if you want to read better and more interesting works, then you should pay attention to the following books:

  • Maya Kucherskaya "Aunt Motya" - a classic novel about love, betrayal and experiences;

  • John Fowles "The French Lieutenant's Mistress". There are many good things in this novel. The author leads the reader to the fact that conscience is an individual choice of each person.

Anne Frank Shelter. Diary in letters". The book presents the diary of a little girl who kept it in Amsterdam while hiding from the Nazis with her family. This is a tragedy of the twentieth century, which was reflected in the notes of a fifteen-year-old girl.

Vladimir Nabokov "Lolita" To this work can be treated with contempt or with admiration. There is no third. A novel that stirred up society and became popular on both sides of the ocean.

The reader himself chooses what literature to read, domestic or foreign. From foreign literature you can choose very interesting books. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is admired by readers around the world. This is a love story that stands a level above all other novels in this category.

Emily Bronte "Wuthering Heights". The novel will take you to England, where the girl fell in love with her cousin. This novel is still a mystery.

Erich Maria Remarque "Arc de Triomphe". The text of this book is divided into quotations. The love story that develops in Nazi-occupied Paris cannot leave the reader indifferent. Paris, two lovers and doom - these are the main directions of the book.

Victor Hugo Notre Dame Cathedral. The novel is also recommended for reading, because this book has withstood the centuries and has not lost its popularity. A story about what can hinder love.

Margaret Mitchell Gone with the Wind. The novel remains a sought-after work decades later. If you are looking for a woman to look up to, then this novel is for you. main character Scarlett O'Hara deserves to be inherited by women with diametrically opposed social views. blackthorn". There are many interesting things about love among Russian classics. For example, Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina has been filmed many times. Performances were staged according to its plot. A story about passion, love, which has destructive power, makes you live with the experiences of the main characters.

After many years of oblivion, the book is again becoming a fashionable attribute in the hands of a person who wants to be known as an intellectual. Of course, today's popularity of literature cannot be compared with the reading boom of the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties, when children sometimes had to be torn away from the adventures of their favorite characters, but there is a completely logical explanation for this. There were no tablets, laptops and other computer miracles then, and something exciting was rarely shown on TV. The question of what is read today in Russia and the world requires a detailed answer. Different books have a target audience… you can’t call it an audience, audio is when they listen. In general, the reader of different genres is different, but they are all good, except for the boring one, as the classic said.

Classic

It is still popular, moreover, its scope has expanded significantly. Those writers who quite recently (in the historical sense, of course) were classified as fiction fell into its category. To the contemporaries of Jack London or Antosha Chekhonte, who lived at the beginning of the twentieth century, these wonderful masters of plot and words seemed to be ordinary people, contemporaries who successfully applied their talent (or even just abilities) in order to earn A.P. Chekhov himself believed that his works will be read and staged in the theater for at most a few years, and there they will be forgotten. Fortunately, the classic was wrong. His stories and novels are still popular today, they are more popular than most of the creations of modern authors, those that are read today. It is he who leads the rating, and not only in Russia, but also in many other countries (in Japan, for example), where, in addition to selling books, performances based on his plays are most often staged, interpreting them each time in a new way. The inhabitants of the planet are also not indifferent to Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Dreiser, London, Dickens, Bulgakov. A few more are in the top ten favorite writers, but in different countries they occupy different positions. Classics are read most often from paper media, so it's more interesting.

Criteria

rate the most books read today is difficult. For this, various methods are used, the main of which is circulation. This method of analysis is of the greatest practical importance, especially for publishers and printers interested in the largest possible sales of their products. However, this approach has an approximate relation to the true state of affairs. A book in our time is not a cheap thing, and today it can be safely attributed to a truly “best gift”, with which it is not a shame to come to a birthday or anniversary. Therefore, a printed edition is often lent to friends and acquaintances who do not want to spend money on such an expensive thing, and often a one-time thing. Home libraries in our time are rare people, volumes take up valuable space in the home, and then there is the Internet, where you can find almost everything, at least what is read today. The rating is looked for in the same place, in order not to get confused in the huge flow of modern and classical literature. So many people do it, drive texts into tablets and read everywhere, on buses, trams and subways.

Read frequency

The circulation of the publication is set by an official called the publisher, who often makes a decision based on his own ideas about how successful the project will be.

Another criterion by which literary ratings and lists of the best books are compiled is a simple arithmetic addition of the number of hits to the author's page on the Internet, if there is one, of course. To do this, site creators install software counters that mark each visitor. The disadvantage of this method is the lack of information. It is not known whether the work was read in full, or it was simply glanced at and immediately closed. In addition, it is impossible to count all readers due to the fact that it and the same story can be presented on different sites, sometimes, alas, without the knowledge of the author, and not all of them provide for the function of cumulative counting. The number of downloads is also not always taken into account, and in this case we are very rarely talking about material rewards.

What do women read

The beautiful half of humanity is more likely than men to be friends with a book. What worries women, and what do they read today? The rating of a dozen works most popular among ladies is closed by Eduard Asadov, a real poet and writer who sang true love. For half a century, the number of admirers of his talent has not decreased, but increased. In ninth place is a seemingly children's book called The Little Princess, or The Story of Sarah Crewe by Francis Burnett. The narrative is naive only at first glance, and mothers, introducing it to their daughters, themselves fall under the spell of the heroine's immediacy. Ustinova's detectives are buying somewhat more often, and Lauren Weisberger, the best-selling author of The Devil Wears Prada, is even higher. Further up the ladder of popularity ascend Joanna Lindsay, Tatyana Polyakova (again ladies' detectives) and with her "Secret World of a Shopaholic". Top positions are occupied by Stephenie Meyer with a vampire love story (Twilight) and a psychological novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Maybe the bottom positions are specific to Russian literature lovers, but the top ones completely repeat the rating of the most read books in the world among women.

What do men love?

If we discard money-mad entrepreneurs (who more often become characters in novels than their consumers) and representatives of the stronger sex, who have an extremely low level of intelligence, then the rest of the not very numerous male brethren are also not averse to holding free time turning pages. Which of the works for them is the most and most read? Many books have been written on the subject of courage. This is J. London, and E. M. Remarque, and historical chronicles, and literature of a military-technical nature. Everyone reads men, from Hemingway to Stephen King, but as a rule, they cannot stand specific women's novels. However, there are exceptions. Women sometimes, too, in fairness, indulge in pleasure with some book, which is considered exclusively male.

Children

Children, as already mentioned, read little now, and the author needs to make a lot of effort, combined with talent, in order to interest them in something. And in this case, it does not matter how deep the thoughts of such a work are, as in general what they read. Today, the rating of teenage and literature is headed by Alexander Anderson's books "Alex and coins" and "All the most beloved fairy tales" by Grigory Oster. In addition to them, fantasy stories, novels and sagas are popular (roughly like science fiction in the past). It can take a long time to analyze the reasons why life in a fictional world seems more interesting to the younger generation than the real one, but such is the prose of life, and it must be reckoned with, which is what publishing houses are doing, interested in the profitability of their activities. Some consolation is the decline in the popularity of Harry Potter. And the nostalgic return to eternal values, expressed in the “Murzilka Archive”, published in two volumes (from 1966 to 1974), is very pleasing.

Humor

Literature that causes laughter is the most difficult genre. Squeezing a tear out of a reader is much easier than making them even smile. The modern book lover reads Zhvanetsky with pleasure, especially the early one, pays tribute to Evgeny Petrov and is interested in contemporary authors. I was pleased with the book with the intriguing title “Plumber. Yours is my knee ”author Se Slava (obviously a pseudonym). Previously, this material was published on popular blogs, and now it came out "live". At the moment, these are the most read books in Russia on a humorous theme, and how to place them on the prize steps is up to the people to decide.

parables

In our country, as well as abroad, a large stratum of lovers of philosophical literature has formed. It's not about some serious scientific research(they are also in demand). These most widely read books in Russia in their genre are designed to encourage a person to think about eternal values, escape from worldly fuss and, if possible, gain wisdom, time-honored. These include the “Prophet” by Khalil Gibran, the paternal moralizing of the holy elders, the instructive polemics of Kuraev, and similar literature. Sales ratings do not give a real picture of the popularity of these publications. It is possible that someone acquires them in order to put them on the shelf in order to create the image of an intellectual person, in other cases they are literally read to holes. When presenting such a book as a gift, one should remember that only a thoughtful person, prone to

Fashion Literature

There is such a capricious and windy lady, who is called fashion. Most often it is found in branded boutiques and car dealerships, but sometimes it is also found in bookstores. A number of authors, having created a certain work, strive for scandalous fame, and achieve it by different methods. They generously saturate the speech of the characters with profanity, trying to give originality to the images, choose stories about cannibals, crazy people, drug addicts and other unsightly audiences, trying to surprise rather than please. For a rather short period of time, sellers tell buyers that these are the most read books in Russia. Today these are some authors, tomorrow others, and their succession does not dry out. It happens that stories do have certain artistic merit, but fashion writers who keep their nose to the wind of conjecture rarely create masterpieces.

It remains for the reader to evaluate his spiritual needs and choose his own among boundless sea literature.

WHAT IS PUBLISHED, WHO IS PUBLISHED. 20 WRITERS WHOSE BOOKS WERE MOST PRINTED AND BOUGHT IN 2017

Some statistics

The Book Chamber of Russia is still summarizing the data for the last quarter, but, apparently, 2017 outperformed 2016 in terms of circulation. In total, about 100 thousand titles of books were published in Russia with a total circulation of about 350 thousand copies.

According to preliminary data, the range of book products has become a little less diverse: if you count by title, in 2016 there were several thousand more books published. However, in 2017 there were fewer reprints (after all, electronic copies of books made the need for reprints less urgent), but more new products came out, including translations. According to the data for the first three quarters of 2017, the share of translated literature in the total number of books accounted for about 13%, and for the same period in 2016 - a little more than 11%.

Noticeable trend: contemporary writer must be able not only to tell stories smoothly, but to create worlds in which it will be interesting for readers and ... colleagues. The share of serial publications, according to preliminary data, has grown by 3% in just one year: "patrols", "stalkers" and "academies" of all stripes rule the mass interests. The desire of publishers to "lay eggs in baskets" is easily explained: the release of a genre novel in a series allows it to immediately find its way to its reader, and the reader to find himself again in the beloved universe. Of course, this does not mean that you meet the same characters over and over again: the books published in the publishing series "LitRPG", "TrueStory" and others are similar in the main, but can radically differ in details.

Another trend is that books are becoming less and less paperback and more and more hardcover. In just one year, hardcover books added as much as 6.5% to their circulation (and paperback editions lost the same amount, respectively). We repeat that these data are preliminary, at the end of the year the statistics will still bring out the final figure, but the alignment of forces is unlikely to be fundamentally different. It is obvious that people are increasingly buying such paper books, the very touch of which brings aesthetic pleasure. And cheap pocketbooks for fast reading gradually replaced by e-books.

TOP-2017: rating of the most popular writers in Russia

The share of the 20 most popular writers in Russia in 2017 accounts for about 1/8 of the total circulation of all books published in the country. Who are these titans of pen, keyboard and royalties?

For clarity, we supplemented our rating with statistical data from the Russian Book Chamber based on the results of the first three quarters of the outgoing year in the sequence "number of titles of published books / their total circulation in thousands of copies." Please note that the same book by the author, published in different publishing houses or in the same publishing house, but in different series, is considered different titles.

20. In this place, the good old (54/225.5)

She was not in the top 20 most popular writers in Russia in 2016, but in 2017 the former glory to the "queen of detectives" returned along with the film adaptation of "" and "".

It is generally accepted that among writers in terms of the number of prophecies that have come true, George Orwell, aka Eric Arthur Blair, ranks first. One can argue with this, but the fact is indisputable that Orwell very accurately predicted many things: from the aggressive influence of the media on the worldview of people, newspeak and reality shows to the logic of development and the crisis of the communist dictatorship. Years do not detract from the popularity of the author "" and "", as well as the relevance of his writings and statements:

"The best books tell you what you already know."
"We, the representatives of the middle class, except correct pronunciation there's nothing to lose."
"If you want an image of the future, imagine a boot trampling a man's face - forever."
"Power is not a means; it is an end. A dictatorship is not established in order to protect the revolution; a revolution is made in order to establish a dictatorship. The purpose of repression is repression. The purpose of torture is torture. The purpose of power is power."
"The masses never rise of themselves and never rise just because they are oppressed. Moreover, they do not even realize that they are oppressed until they have been given the opportunity to compare."
"In a time of universal lies, telling the truth is extremism."
"War is a way of smashing to pieces, pulverizing in the stratosphere, drowning in the depths of the sea, materials that could improve the life of the people and thereby, ultimately, make them more intelligent."
"Patriotism is by its nature not aggressive either militarily or culturally. Nationalism is inseparable from the desire for power."

Brown was silent, silent, and in 2017 broke into the top 20 immediately to the 16th position in the ranking. And, perhaps, will further improve its position, taking into account book sales in the last quarter. Brown has two trump cards: "" came out for children from 10 years old and, in which the villains prevent the scientist Robert Langdon from learning, no less, the secret of the origin of mankind.

For comparison: in the top 20 for 2016, Maria Metlitskaya ranked 16th with a circulation of 338,000 copies. The author of numerous sentimental novels has a chance to repeat the success.

It's nice that the most popular writer in the world is appreciated in his "homeland". Moreover, the circulation of Lev Nikolayevich is growing. In 2016, the total circulation of his books amounted to 310 thousand copies in 12 months, now the milestone of 300 thousand has already been crossed in the 10th month since the beginning of the year.

On our site you can find not only Tolstoy's books, but also interesting publications about the writer:

The housing problem spoils far from the first generation of Russians, but we still love and appreciate Mikhail Afanasyevich - from year to year he is in the top 20 most popular writers.

In March 2017, the premiere of the film "Split" directed by Shyamalan took place in Russia, which fueled interest in Keyes' book about a maniac with 24 alter-ego "". Also in 2017, the novel "" was first published in Russian. But the main hit of Keys, of course, "" is one of the most famous books of the 20th century.

In the 2016 ranking, the writer took second place, having published 66 titles with a total circulation of 762,000 copies in a year. Will she be able to repeat last year's success? Carefully assume that it is unlikely. Although Tatyana Ustinova (nee Kuralesina) is undoubtedly a woman of inexhaustible energy, and one can expect any feats from her. It is enough to see what vigorous activity Tatyana Vitalievna launched on the TVC channel, where her author's programs are replaced by series based on her own detective stories. And in the ranking of 2017, she is still on the 7th line.

Although the name of this author of adventurous detective stories has not become a household name, Tatyana Polyakova is included in the top 20 most read and sold writers in Russia from year to year. Her statement is known: “At one time I said that I would retire after the fiftieth. But I saw a poster in honor of the release of the hundredth book by Daria Dontsova and thought:“ Am I weak? In 2017, Tatyana Polyakova released several new novels, including "" and "". At this rate, the writer is only 3-4 years away from retirement.

Plot depth and great writing style. Every year, Remarque's books are published in Russia with a circulation of about half a million copies.

In 2017, the most popular police lieutenant colonel turned 60 years old. But Alexandra Marinina is still in the ranks, having released the two-volume "". In addition, Marina Anatolyevna (real name of the writer) has significantly improved her position compared to 2016. Although last year she entered the top 20 most popular Russian writers, but according to the results of 12 months, her books were published with a circulation of 428 thousand copies, which is almost 140 thousand less than in just 9 months of 2017. Why? In 2016, Marinina decided on a creative experiment and published three volumes of the family saga with a medical and legal bias "" about the events from 1842 to the present day. Apparently, something went wrong, although more successfully than others. But as soon as the writer returned to the genre of a police detective mile, the circulation of her books increased again.

The popularity of this writer in Russia is not weakening, and every year the circulation of his reprints amounts to hundreds of thousands of copies.

Who is the leader of the ranking? Of course she is, the famous Daria Dontsova! Still popular and extremely prolific. New novels with her name on the cover come out with such frequency that either Agrippina Arkadyevna does not eat, does not sleep, does not walk her dogs, but only knocks on computer keys, or ... However, despite the evil rumors, the army of readers does not lose their taste for a cocktail from simple, banal, understandable characters and non-banal plot twists. And Daria Dontsova, a person and a brand, has been easily bypassing pompous colleagues with a wide smile for many years now.

Where is Pelevin?

Yes, the list of literary favorites in 2017 is similar to the top 20 of 2016, but there are changes. Several names have disappeared from it. The author of good women's prose about life and the detective, who in 2016 occupied the 8th (circulation 522 thousand copies) and 9th (499.19 thousand copies) lines of the rating, lost the most points.

Left the 15th position (350.5 thousand copies). The authors of crime novels (297 thousand copies) and (285.5 thousand copies) who were on the bottom lines of the rating left the top 20.

But it's one thing when Christie and Orwell appear in the rating instead of Alexandrova and Kolychev - it's not a sin to give way to such titans. It’s different when the “co-author of modernity” was in the ranking of the most popular writers of 2016 at 17 positions (36 titles, 313 thousand copies in circulation; top - Maria Metlitskaya, bottom - Leo Tolstoy), and in 2017 did not even reach the 20th places.

There are several possible explanations for this.

First: "read on the iPhone" Pelevin writes for the new generation of intellectuals, for whom mobility is a world-forming principle: mobile communications, mobile office, mobile library, after all.

Secondly, most writers release novelties in the first half of the year, while Pelevin's new novel was released at the very end of September, and the current statistics of the Russian Book Chamber have not yet taken into account additional circulations of his books in the fourth quarter. The final results of the year can correct the literary picture.

Third, perhaps Russian readers in the past year Orwell and the Strugatskys actually turned out to be closer to Pelevin.

And where is fantasy and new science fiction?

Urban fantasy and combat, school and academic, chrono-opera with fantasy elements or science fiction about hitmen, apocalypse, space and steam engines - where is it all? Fantasy fiction genres and subgenres together are the most popular, if not the most popular, subspecies of literature today. Moreover, in the film industry competing with books, fantasy, unlike detectives and rom-coms, has not yet been put on stream, since it is difficult and expensive to shoot it. So why in the top 20 writers, half of the list is still detectives, and not science fiction?

An optimist will say that fantasy and science fiction are the literature of the young and progressive, who today prefer electronic books paper.

A pessimist will object that although modern science fiction writers are in demand, eminent ones, like or, rarely write, trading franchisees, while other authors give their strength to hasty one-day books, books "for the evening". And therefore, even with the general abundance of circulation, the Strugatskys or Bradbury put each modern science fiction writer individually on the shoulder blades of one left.
